Medical Representative or MR or Medical Sales Representative, as the name suggests, is a sales professional who is involved with the promotion and sale of medical products, mostly the medications, for pharmaceutical companies. These MRs are responsible for building awareness of medical supplies of their companies. The pharma companies see them as their representative who perform the key communication between medical professionals and pharma companies. They do one to one meetings with chemists in their clinics, hospitals, doctors, and places of business.
Medical Representative: Role
- Introducing new products to pharmacists, doctors, and chemists.
- Make sure that the medications are available to the chemists.
- To discuss clinical usage and the dosages with the medical professionals.
- Providing the company with market feedback.
- To attend and organise conferences, trade exhibitions, and meetings.
- Identifying and establishing a new market by meeting new doctors, pharmacists, etc.
- Achieving the sales target.
- Regular meetings with the doctors to maintain relations.
- By interacting with doctors and pharmacists, promote new products.
- Maintaining and writing reports.
Medical Representative: Eligibility
Companies generally prefer candidates with an educational background in life sciences or biology for the position or role of MR. These are some of the preferred degrees:
- Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing
- Any other relevant degree
- Bachelor's degree in life sciences
Some smaller pharma companies do hire candidates with multiple other backgrounds and provide the basic training about the diseases and the related drugs before sending them on the field. The job is very hectic in its initial stages but as soon as an MR builds the relationships with the chemists and the doctors, etc., and gets an idea about the market, the job becomes comparatively easy.
