- First, the candidate has to appear in the Civil Services Exam conducted by UPSC.
- After becoming an IPS officer, the candidate undergoes the specified training as an IPS officer.
- After completing the training, they are appointed as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
- They are promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) on the basis of experience, track record and performance.
- After reaching the rank of SP, the next rank is that of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), and then the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
