Full Form of ICU

ICU or Intensive Care Unit is a special hospital division offering patients suffering from a severe accident or disease critical care medications and intensive care. The patients struggling from the most life-threatening and severe injuries or illnesses that require continuous and constant supervision by a staff of specialist physicians and nurses are treated in intensive care units. The ICU team is specialized in the treatment of patients who are badly injured or seriously ill. Other terms that are used instead of ICU are ITU (Intensive Treatment Unit) or CCU (Critical Care Unit).

When Intensive Care is required?

• If a patient is very ill and requires extensive therapy and careful monitoring, or if they are undergoing surgery and intensive care can aid in their recovery, intensive care is required.
• The majority of ICU patients have issues with one or more organs. They may be unable to breathe on their own, for instance.
• There are several conditions and circumstances that might necessitate intense care.
• Common explanations include:

• A dangerous ailment with a brief duration, such as a heart attack or stroke
• A severe illness, including sepsis or severe pneumonia
• Major surgery may be a planned element of your recovery, or an emergency step if difficulties arise.

ICUs often have their staff, like physical therapists, respiratory therapists, anaesthesia specialists, pharmacists, and so on.

• Severe complications with the heart, such as extremely low blood pressure and heart attack.
• Complications of the respiratory system connected to asthma or complicated pneumonia.
• Any circumstance of accident that requires major surgery & urgent intervention.
• The people who are in a coma have to be kept in the ICU.
• Incidents of kidney failure and liver complications that require dialysis.
• A patient needs treatment in ICU after a major operation.
• There is a specific ICU and, it is labelled as NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) for babies who are born early or are born with severe diseases.
