IBM: History

  • IBM was founded by Charles Ranlett Flint as the Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR) on June 16 1911. It was the result of merger of three companies; International Time Recording Company, Tabulating Machine Company, and Computing Scale Company.
  • Thomas J. Watson, Sr., in 1914, joined the CTR from the National Cash Register Company.
  • The CTR was named, in 1924, as International Business Machines (IBM).
  • IBM introduced the first computer, IBM 701 defense calculator, in 1953.
  • IBM developed a programming language and named it FORTRAN in 1957.
  • It bought the patents for the electric typewriter in 1933 and produced an improved version of the typewriter in 1935.
  • IBM introduced the first hard drive in 1956, the 305 RAMAC.
  • IBM introduced floppy disks in 1967 and changed the way data was saved and moved.
  • It partnered with American Express and American Airlines in 1970 and created the first airline ticket vending kiosk.
  • IBM created the first ATM, the IBM 2984 in 1972.
  • The Universal Product Code (UPC) code was introduced by IBM.
  • Magnetic stripe technology was developed by IBM and it introduced magnetic strips on credit cards and driving licenses.
  • It introduced its first personal computer in 1981 and named it IBM PC.
  • IBM was ranked the second-largest U.S. Company in terms of the number of employees (435,000) in 2012.
