Definition

The full form of OTT is "over-the-top" which refers to any service that is made available to us through the internet instead of the traditional distribution networks like cable and DTH. It is mostly associated with video streaming platforms, but it also includes online messaging and voice calling platforms such as WhatsApp.

Accessing Content

An internet connection and a compatible hardware component, like a laptop or a phone, are a must to access content from the OTT platforms.

Various Types of Content

There are three main categories of OTT content:

• Voice call: This is also called VoIP or Voiceover Internet Protocol. This refers to the calls made over the internet, with the voice-over, like Skype, FaceTime, and WhatsApp.
• Television: It can be any media service that offers streaming of video content like TV shows and movies via an app or website.
• Messaging: This is your Telegram, WhatsApp, and other messaging apps using data.

Any media service offering a stream of video content like movies or TV shows, through an app or website is called OTT television. It started initially as a content hosting platform, but then it went on into making the content of its own.

• Easy to use: They can be accessed easily. You just need to have a stable internet connection.
• Convenience: You can watch your favourite programs any time you want. Also, as many times as you want. There are almost no geographical constraints and you can watch from anywhere.
• Variety: You will get a large variety of content like movies, TV shows, comedy specials, poetry events, other events, etc.
• Cost-effective: As compared to traditional D2H connections, these are cost-effective.
• No commercials: The main benefit is, by providing a small fee, you can watch without being interrupted by commercials.
