Generally, when you plug in your laptop to the charger, there is a faint beep, and the light near the charging port starts glowing. If your battery was very low, then probably your screen glows up a little after you’ve connected the charger.
But sometimes you connect the charger, and there’s nothing from the other side. No glowing light beside the charging point, no response at all from your laptop.
You can be very cautious about your battery but, anything could still go wrong. In that case, there are a few things you could do to get things back to normal.
So let’s see what those few things are.
Have You Plugged In Your Laptop?
Yes, this sounds silly, but this is still the first thing that you need to check. There are numerous occasions when we don’t put the plug in the socket properly, or the adapter is not inserted properly. Also, make sure that the battery is properly placed in its compartment and there is nothing with the points where the battery and the laptop connect.
Find out if the problem has anything to do with the laptop at all by plugging the charger into some other outlet.
If the problem remains after this, then it is clear that it was not caused by the user but rather by some internal error. Now we just need to find the source of the problem.
Let’s look at the other causes of why the problem might occur and how to resolve them.
Lose the Battery
If you are using a removable battery, take the battery out and long-press the power button for 15 seconds to drain your computer. Now, plug in the charger and turn the power on.
If the laptop has no problem starting, then it is probably a case of battery failure.
Now, if you cannot open up your battery ( like in most macs) then you might have to open your laptop up or take it to a specialist for repair.
Are You Using The Correct USB-C Port
USB-C has become a popular standard for connecting peripherals across platforms for charging or any data transfer. Now, some devices like the Huawei MateBook X Pro have two ports that can be used for charging and data transfer. So if you are having a charging issue you can check if you are connected to the correct USB-C port.
Breaks and Burnouts
A common issue these days is the breaking of the charging cable at the ends because of the way we use the cable and also the fragile material they are made of. A break at either end causes the charger to stop charging so make sure that you check the cable for such breaks if you’re having an issue with charging your laptop.
Another thing that happens is burnout in the adapter. This happens due to excess heat sometimes and stops it from charging. You can sniff the adapter for the smell of burnt plastic to find out whether this has happened.
Check the Connector
Make sure that the pin end of the charger is solidly placed inside the port. If there is dust or some other build-up inside, it might fail to make a solid connection and thus interrupt the charging. Also, make sure the after you enter the pin in the port, the connection is not wobbly.
Check Your Settings
For Windows Laptops
On your Windows 10 laptop, go to the start menu and then look for the Power and Sleep settings then click on the Additional Power Settings. Go to the Change Plan Settings and then check if everything is set properly.
Keep checking for some settings that could have been altered in the display, battery, and sleep options. For instance, if you set the computer to shut down when the battery level gets very low or set the low battery level at a very high percentage.
These setting changes could cause a power malfunction even when there's no physical problem with the battery or charging cable. You should just restore the profile to default settings and you will find out the alterations that were made and if that was causing the interruption in charging.
For Mac Laptops
Review your preferences in the Energy Saver pane of the system preferences. With the Mac slider, you can adjust the settings, and select the amount of time of inactivity before the computer can go off to sleep. If this interval is set too short, you might have some battery issues.
Make sure that you check these settings for both wall power and battery power. You could always go back to the default settings to check if any change in the settings is causing the problem.
Updating Your Drivers
For Windows Laptops
After opening the Start menu, look for "Device Manager." Under Batteries, there will be a few items: one for the charger and one named Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, there can also be others. Right-click on all the items and select the Update Driver option
After you’ve downloaded all the drivers, restart the computer. If this doesn't work you can download the updates from the official website. Even uninstalling Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery is an option, this will make Windows reinstall the driver from scratch.
For Mac Laptops
Here you need to try to reset the System Management Controller (SMC). For the older Macs, you just need to remove the battery, drain the power by long-pressing the power button for 5 seconds, and then restart your laptop.
For the new Macs with sealed batteries, just shut down the computer but keep the adapter connected. Keeping the power turned off, hold the power button while pressing the Shift-Control-Option keys on the left-hand side of the keyboard. Then release the power button and the keys simultaneously, now power on the laptop.
Call In Outside Assistance
If even after this you are facing problems, this is the right time to contact tech support. Every particular model will have its own issues, and a good technician must have seen all of them.
The person might walk you through some of the steps mentioned above and then figure out the actual problem.
