Music is an amazing colour to fill in your monotonous day. Sitting in front of the screen, involuntarily typing; this is when you need to play some John Mayer or vibe with some Lana Del Ray tunes, but “Ughh!! the speakers don’t work.”
We have all been there. This has been a bug in Windows 10 for some time, but don’t worry we have got you covered.
Let’s find out the different ways to counter this
no sound on Computer.
Check Your Volume
Yes, this might seem redundant but there are innumerable such occasions when you might involuntarily put your computer on mute. In that case, Click on the speaker icon on the bottom corner of your screen, and make sure that your volume is unmuted and turned up. (If you are using external speakers, make sure that they're turned on too.)
As you drag the volume slider on the screen and let go, you should hear a sound. If you don’t then the problem lies somewhere else. If there is a sound, then chances are that the app you're using might be muted. Make sure that the music player, video player, or any other app you're using is not on mute and turned up. This goes for YouTube and all the other browser apps. Chances are that you might have muted them involuntarily.
Put On Some Headphones
Sometimes the
no sound on Computer issue lies with the laptops' built in speakers, in that case, you can try putting on a set of headphones or external speakers. If you can listen to the sound through them then it is confirmed that there is some issue with your built in speakers. You can try putting on some USB headphones (like a USB gaming headset)as they can bypass the default audio driver and tell you where the problem lies.
Changing Your Audio Device
There could be a possibility that your speakers are alright but Windows could be directing your sound to a wrong output device —this is quite frequent if you've been plugged in a USB audio device, or are plugged into an external HDMI monitor that has no speakers. For fixing this click on the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar and choose Sounds. Then you can enter your audio preferences.
Look for the device you want to use under the playback tab —If it is not there, try right-clicking and checking Show Disabled Devices—then select the output device and click the Set Default button. If you are unsure about the one you want to use, you could use the hit and trial method and check out all the devices in the list.
Disabling Audio Enhancements
When there are any audio disturbances at your end, Microsoft officially recommends disabling any audio enhancements that might be turned on. For this go to the sound menu and select the audio device that you want to use, click on Properties, and toggle around in the options that appear.
Ensure the formats that are supported are checked, there are no enhancements, and that in the Advanced tab, the exclusive mode is unchecked. Even the spatial sound enhancements might be turned off. Now try playing the audio again, and find out if any of those options caused the issue.
Install or Update Your Drivers
The first thing to do is when there is any malfunctioning PC hardware. Click on the Start Menu and type "device manager," now when the option appears press Enter. Scroll down to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and expand the menu to show all the possible audio output devices on your PC.
If against any of these there’s a yellow question mark, then that shows that you might need to find and install its driver from the manufacturer's website. If not, installing the driver is still something that you might consider doing. Then you can also try uninstalling the driver: for that just right-click the one you're thinking of using and select Uninstall Device. Then you can just reboot windows after which it will just reinstall the previous drivers and
no sound can be automatically solved.
Update Your BIOS
There are some instances where, even a hardware incompatibility, software update, or Windows reinstallation can make your PC go soundless, and you might have to change something in the BIOS. In this case, first, reboot your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, you can do this by pressing Delete, F2, or some other key at startup.
Your sound card has to be enabled in the BIOS, as it might have been disabled at any point. If that’s of no use, check what BIOS or UEFI version you're using, and compare it against the latest version on your laptop manufacturer's website. If there is an updated version available, then that might be worth updating. Just make sure that you read the instructions and proceed cautiously, as a BIOS update also has the potential to break things if done improperly.
Repair the Speakers
If the issue cannot be sorted through the software alterations then there might be some issue with the speaker itself, maybe some cable has come off. If there is a manual repair for your PC, just open it bravely and see what all is there inside of it —or you can always bring in the professionals. If your computer is inside the warranty period then you can very well ask the manufacturer for a free repair, or some local shop might sort out the issue for you. Chances are you’ll be back at it in no time at all and
no sound on Computer will be resolved.
